Regretfully, I’ve had to add a category for places to avoid, not because there are so many, but because some business situations are just so bad that I feel compelled to warn readers to avoid them. The category was created following a bad experience involving Priceline and an unscrupulous host who refused to allow me and a group of friends to cancel a visit to Acapulco during the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020. We ended up having to process the refund through the credit company after Priceline made it clear they represent the host’s interests, not the guests. Similar types of profiteering and unscrupulous business practices will be exposed by this category. If you’re concerned about areas considered dangerous to travel for tourists, I’d recommend checking advisories published by the US Department of State. In my opinion, advisories published by the US Department of State are over-sweeping covering broad areas whereas most dangers are confined to smaller areas that are more easily avoided as long as you don’t get lost. Living in Mexico, I don’t worry myself too much about those warnings, relying instead on the knowledge of local conditions by my Mexican friends who have so generously shared their love for Mexico with me.
